Request for Awards Nominations
Deadline for Submissions June 30, 2008
Awards nominees must be NJPhA members in good standing and nominations
should be forwarded to the NJPhA Awards Committee no later than
June 30, 2008. The Awards Committee will consider only those awards
nominations submitted on the appropriate application forms accompanied
by the nominee’s resume and cover letter stating why the
nominee should receive the award. Application forms are available
through the NJPhA Office or through your Component President or
Trustee.
ROSARIO “RUSS”

NJPhA presents the Rosario “Russ” J. Mannino, R.P.
Award to a pharmacist for meritorious service to the profession
of pharmacy and the New Jersey Pharmacists Association.
WYETH BOWL OF HYGEIA
AWARD [click to download nomination form]
NJPhA presents the Bowl of Hygeia Award sponsored by Wyeth to
a living, NJ licensed pharmacist who has compiled an outstanding
record of community service that, apart from the practice of pharmacy,
reflects well on the profession. The recipient cannot be currently
serving, nor served in the immediate past two years as an officer
of the Association or on the Awards Committee. >>

JESSE GAYNOR AWARD

The Jesse Gaynor Award is presented to a pharmacist who has shown
meritorious service and dedication to the practice of pharmacy
by contributing to elevating the level of expertise of consultant
pharmacists through education.
FREDERICK B. KILMER
AWARD [click to download nomination form]
Dr. Frederick B. Kilmer served as president of NJPhA in 1886.
He operated a pharmacy in New Brunswick, NJ and later became the
Director of Laboratories for the J&J Corporation. He is often
credited with establishing the concept of research at J&J
that became a standard for much of the pharmaceutical industry
in this country. Dr. Kilmer was also a prodigious writer concerning
the needs of the profession. He was a strong believer in the value
of articulate writing as a means of improving the profession of
pharmacy and the health of our citizenry.
Dr. Kilmer bequeathed a monetary gift to the NJPhA to support
a prize for the recognition of excellence in pharmacy writing
by a member of NJPhA. All members, with the exception of educators
and laboratory workers, are eligible. The award has been given
since 1938 at the Association’s annual convention. Selection
is made by a special selection committee appointed by the President
of NJPhA.
ELAN INNOVATIVE PHARMACY
PRACTICE AWARD [click to download nomination form]
The Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award was created in 1993 jointly
by DuPont Pharma and a planning committee of the National Council
of State Pharmacy Association Executives. Both DuPont Pharma and
the Committee recognized the key role of the practicing pharmacist
in delivering patient care.
Since 2002, due to DuPont Pharmaceuticals’ divestiture,
Elan Biopharmaceuticals is honored to continue this significant
award and become its sponsor. The Award is intended to honor practicing
pharmacists who have demonstrated innovation in pharmacy practice
that has resulted in improved patient care. Since its introduction
10 years ago, the Award has gained wide acceptance throughout
pharmacy.
ANDREW J. PRESTON PAC AWARD

The Andrew J. Preston PAC Award was established in 1998 by NJPhA
Past-President Andrew J. Preston to recognize a pharmacist of
NJPhA who has been outstanding in a local, state or national political
activity that has benefitted the profession of pharmacy.

of all types of organizational work, which the nominee has rendered
DONALD J. WERNIK ACADEMIC
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD [click to download nomination form]
The NJPhA Board of Trustees established the Donald J. Wernik Academic
Achievement Award on the occasion of his retirement in 1994 to
memorialize his efforts on behalf of our profession and academia.
He has been an active member of NJPhA since 1951 and was on the
Rutgers College of Pharmacy faculty for over 25 years. This recognition
is presented to a pharmacist in academia who has also performed
outstanding service for our Profession at large.
SIDNEY B. GILMAN PHARMACY TECHNICIAN AWARD
Submit Written Nominations to NJPhA Office
This award is presented to an NJPhA Pharmacy Technician member
in recognition of Individual Excellence and Outstanding Service
to the Profession of Pharmacy.
When sending nominations, please include a detailed description
of all types of organizational work, which the nominee has rendered.
PHARMACISTS MUTUAL
DISTINGUISHED YOUNG PHARMACIST AWARD [click to download nomination

This award is presented to a pharmacist who best meets the following
Selection Guidelines:
1. Entry degree in Pharmacy received less than 10 years ago (1994
graduation date or later).
2. Licensed to practice in state in which selected.
3. Current membership in the state pharmacy association.
4. Practice retail, institutional, managed care, or consulting
pharmacy in the year selected.
5. Participation in national pharmacy associations, professional
programs, state association activities, and/or community service.
WILLIAM H. MCNEILL
AWARD [click to download nomination form]
The William H. McNeill Award was created by the Bergen County
Pharmaceutical Society and approved by the Board of Trustees of
the NJPhA. First awarded in 1962, it is presented annually at
the Association’s annual convention. The award recognizes
outstanding community service work done in the preceding year
or years. The recipient is selected by a special committee composed
jointly of representatives of the NJPhA and the Bergen County
Pharmaceutical Society. William H. McNeill was a pharmacist who
practiced in Midland Park, NJ and was well noted for both organizational
and community service. He served as president of the NJPhA in
1922-23 and as President Emeritus of the Association from 1956
until his death in 1961.

You may have seen the investigative TV journal program
20-20 “Is your Pharmacy Error Proof?” segment that
aired on Friday, March 30, 2007. NJPharma wants you to know that
all pharmacies should have a continuous quality commitment program
in place. Here is a link to an easy to use, very affordable risk
management tool (PQC) that pharmacists can use to help prevent
medication errors!

New iRx reports --providing key practical information
regarding drug products in a brief format. However, the resources
will not contain sufficient information upon which to base formulary
or other medication use policy decisions.
Medicare Part D Drug Plan Workbooks
Available Online
Independent pharmacists can now obtain copies of the new Medicare
workbook for beneficiaries, entitled “ Medicare Prescription
Drug Plan Guide: How to Choose Your 2007 Plan.” The workbook
-- a collaborative effort of NACDS, NCPA, and America's Health
Insurance Plans (AHIP) -- provides important information to help
beneficiaries decide which type of Part D plan makes the most
sense for them, given their current medication needs.

Promoting Influenza Immunizations
The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS)
is launching an influenza immunization campaign for the 2005-06
influenza season. Print materials, including pharmacy bag stuffers
and 8.5x11 posters, are available from the NJDHSS in limited quantity
and can be ordered on a first come,first served basis by calling
609-588-7500. These materials are also available for easy download
on the Internet at http://www.nj.gov/flu.
Please encourage your pharmacy staff to staple the bag stuffers
to each prescription bag. We encourage you to join us in our efforts
to promote influenza immunizations to New Jersey’s residents.
