Donald Wernik
Donald Wernik has distinguished himself through his innovative contributions to the practice of pharmacy and his foresight and humanitarian efforts in the civic sector.
After serving Overseas as a Marine Corps Sergeant during World War II, Don was graduated with honors from the Rutgers College of' Pharmacy in 1950. He immediately became a community pharmacy practitioner and an extremely active member of his county and state professional organizations. In addition he served on the faculty at Rutgers College of Pharmacy for over 30 years as a highly regarded role model for over 4,000 students. Don was instrumental in executing the dramatic changes which occurred in the practice of pharmacy during the second half of the 20th century. Don served as President of the New Jersey Pharmacists Association in 1967-68 and has remained active continuing to serve as a consultant for NJPA and the Permanent Organization Committee. His wife Joyce was also active in our organization serving as President of the NJPhA Auxiliary in 1969-70.
In 1950 Don replaced the existing practice of recording prescription records in a ledger with individual patient profile cards which he designed. In 1972, under Don’s leadership as President, the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy mandated the use or patient profile records as well as patient counseling. NJ was the first state in the country to mandate implementation of these important elements of good clinical practice. He was also in the forefront of the effort to implement mandatory continuing education requirements for pharmacists. Don took the lead to improve the health of his patients by refusing to sell tobacco products in his pharmacy. He has served on numerous national pharmacy committees and was recognized for his efforts by the American Pharmacists Association when in 1976 he was the recipient of the Daniel B Smith Award for outstanding community service.
